Resident loses $3,800 to scam

A Jamestown resident was bilked out of more than $3,800 after wiring money for a vehicle, according to Detective Sgt. Leroy Gross, Jamestown Police Department.

“Some folks found a vehicle in their price range on craigslist. The vehicle was supposedly in Bismarck,” Gross said. “Of course it was a very good deal and he had lots of offers for the vehicle and the needed money quickly and suggested they wire it, so they did.”

Gross said people should never wire money. Scammers always ask victims to wire money. People should also take other precautions when purchasing a vehicle on the Internet.

“A clue here is when the seller is offering to ship you the vehicle,” Gross said. “Nobody does that.”

People should always also look at the circumstances as well when a price is suspiciously low.

He said people using a divorce, a deployed family member in the armed service or a spouse passing away are all examples that are in most cases fraudulent.
