Top offenses to square off

The top two scoring girls basketball teams in the West Region square off tonight at the JHS gym.

Turtle Mountain (4-7 West, 6-7 overall) is in town to face the Blue Jays, who have not played since knocking off Bismarck one week ago.

Jamestown is 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the region and trailing only Turtle Mountain (66.5) in scoring. The Blue Jays, led by the West’s top scorers — Kyra Dewald at 21.1 points per game — are good for 64 points per game.

The Braves are carried by Whitney Wallette, who nearly averages a double-double at 18.8 points and 9.75 rebounds per game.

Jamestown has the top rebounder — Paige Peterson 11.73 rpg — and the leader in assists — McKayla Orr 4.55 apg — in the conference.

The Blue Jay boys have just two wins, but one of them is over the winless Braves (0-11, 0-13). Still, Turtle Mountain has one of the top players in the region in Tristan Keplin, averaging 17.9 points and 7.29 rebounds per game.

The Blue Jay wrestling team takes the No. 1 132-pounder (Jaden Horsted) and the top-ranked 152-pounder — unbeaten Zane Braun — to the West Region meet today in Minot.

The Blue Jays missed out on the team duals at next week’s state meet, but are ranked 10th as a team heading into today’s action.

Paxton Mewes holds the No. 6 spot in the state rankings at 113.

The top eight finishers in each weight class advance to the state meet next weekend at the Fargodome.

The Jamestown College basketball teams return to action on Sunday at the Civic Center.

Both games should be entertaining.

The 13th-ranked Jimmie women are coming off a bad shooting game against Valley City State on Wednesday. They suffered just their fifth loss in 26 games.

The Jimmies (21-5) defeated South Dakota Mines in Rapid City Jan. 11. The Hardrockers (14-9) have been hot of late, though. They had won five straight before losing to Southwest Minnesota State of the NSIC on Tuesday.

The Jimmie men (12-15) are coming off an overtime win over No. 19 Valley City State on Wednesday. Jamestown College blew a 12-point second half lead, then won it in overtime to beat the Vikings for the second time in three games.

The Hardrockers (16-7) rolled in the earlier meeting, winning 68-39, but the Jimmies were without leading scorers Mark Hoge and Davon Thomas for that one. Sunday’s action begins at 2 p.m. with the women’s game.
