Mustangs, Cards flex muscles

Much like in last week’s region dual tournaments, South Border and Carrington flexed their muscles again.

South Border went 6-of-6 in championship matches to win the Region 1 individual tournament with 243.5 points on Saturday in Napoleon.

The Mustangs received titles from Tyler Toepke-Floyd (106), Blake Bosch (126), Brayden Kuntz (138), Tucker Meidinger (160), James Thielges (182) and Tanner Meidinger (195). They qualified 13 of a possible 14 to the Class B state tournament, set for Thursday through Saturday at the Fargodome.

Oakes (182.5) and Lisbon (181) finished second and third, respectively. Napoleon’s Andrew Beine (220), Nicholas Becker (170) and Trenten Jangula (152) also won titles.

Carrington and Central Cass dominated the Region 2 tournament in Walhalla, combining for 11 champions.

The Cardinals put up 241 points, though, 46 ahead of Central Cass for the team title. Carrington put eight in the finals, getting six champions in Chaz Bauer (126), Walker Carr (132), Billy Holtan (145), Brett Lyman (160), Austin Schuldheisz (195) and Cordell Schroeder (285). Keenan Kvamme (120) and Seth Zink (170) finished second.

South Border and Carrington will also be top seeds in Thursday’s state dual tournament. South Border, the Region 1 champ, plays Region 4 No. 2 seed Beulah-Hazen. Carrington, the Region 2 champ, squares off against Stanley-Powers Lake-Tioga-Ray, which is seeded third out of Region 2.

Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock meets Hettinger-Scranton-Richardton-Taylor-Hebron in an alphabet soup quarterfinal. The other first-round matchup is Minot Ryan vs. Central Cass. Start time is approximately 11 a.m. for all duals.
