Woman pleads not guilty to child abuse

A New Salem woman has pleaded not guilty to child abuse or neglect related to the broken arm of an infant.

NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) — A New Salem woman has pleaded not guilty to child abuse or neglect related to the broken arm of an infant.

The Bismarck Tribune reported that 36-year-old Kyann McLaughlin pleaded not guilty to the felony at the Morton County Courthouse on Tuesday. She also waived a preliminary hearing.

Authorities said McLaughlin broke the arm of a 7-month-old girl in December at her in-home day care. McLaughlin called the girl’s mother and told her she thought the girl’s shoulder was dislocated when McLaughlin picked her up after a diaper change. But doctors said the girl’s arm was broken. They said the only explanation was that the arm was pulled forcefully and twisted.
