Darts, pool, bowling for heart patients

If at first you don’t succeed, tri, tri again at the Redneck Triathlon, a family-friendly benefit for heart disease patients that will feature bowling, darts and pool.

“We’re going to do a fun triathlon instead of a fitness triathlon,” said Rayette Brown, WomenHeart support network coordinator in Jamestown. “Jamestown likes the fun, and it’s going for a great cause.”

Teams of three people and individuals are welcome to sign up for the Saturday event. Registration begins at noon, and the games will go from 1 to 4 p.m., all at Buffalo Lanes.

All players will participate in all three events, with one of each person’s scores counting toward the competition. The team gets to decide whose scores count, but every participant will have one score that counts.

And as a “redneck” competition, every game will feature a silly twist. Bowling, for example, will include a few surprise frames, in which participants will have to bowl “granny-style,” or with the opposite hand, or while doing the bunny hop.

Darts will be played with bar darts, rather than allowing people to bring in their own darts, Brown said in order to keep the competition fair for everybody.

Pool will be a three-ball game, and people will be scored based on how many tries it takes them to get all three pool balls in the pockets.

Trophies will be available for first, second, third and last place. Prizes will also be available for the people with the best redneck costumes. Door prizes will be given away.

A silent auction during the event will feature gift baskets, gift certificates and many other items, Brown said.

All proceeds from the event will benefit local heart patients, WomenHeart and the American Heart Association.

Most of the money will stay local, placed in a fund at First Community Credit Union that will be used to help heart patients with traveling or other treatment-associated expenses, such as hotel bills.

“Everything, absolutely, is going back to heart,” Brown said.

WomenHeart is a national coalition for women with heart disease. It stresses early detection, accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Participation costs $20 per person or $45 for a team of three.
