City in Oil Patch to better traffic flow

A city in the heart of the North Dakota Oil Patch is looking at ways to improve traffic flow. North Dakota Department of Transportation counts show a dramatic increase in the number of vehicles on the streets of Minot, in northwest North Dakota.

MINOT (AP) — A city in the heart of the North Dakota Oil Patch is looking at ways to improve traffic flow.

North Dakota Department of Transportation counts show a dramatic increase in the number of vehicles on the streets of Minot, in northwest North Dakota.

Traffic near a popular south side shopping area was up 79 percent from 2008 and 31 percent from the spring of 2011. Vehicle counts near the city’s airport increased 31 percent from spring 2011.

The state is providing a $75,000 grant for a $90,000 traffic study, which is expected to take a year to complete.

The Minot Daily News reported that the city’s engineering department will be reviewing proposals from firms interested in conducting the study and will make a recommendation to the city council.
