Alex Lind was named West Region Senior Athlete of the Year following another strong performance on Friday night.

Lind tied for second in the all around with a sparkling 37.425, tying with Bismarck Century’s Jessica Gabriel and trailing only Kaylee Keller of Bismarck (37.950).

Lind placed in the top five in all four events, highlighted by a 9.5 on floor for second.

“She was right up there with the top guns,” JHS coach Dave Tews said. “She had a good meet, but she can do better.”

As for the award?

“It was very well deserved,” said the longtime JHS coach of Lind’s honor.

Lind was fourth on bars (9.2) and beam (9.375) and fifth on vault (9.35).

The Blue Jays finished fourth in the loaded West Region field, but their score of 140.275 was solid.

“You finish fourth and you think, maybe we didn’t do that well, but that wasn’t the case at all,” Tews said. “Actually, I thought the kids performed pretty well.”

Scoring seemed to be down across the board.

Dickinson ran away with the team title at 146.550.

Erin Hillerud, Abbie Conlon and Jenna Stilwell each scored in three events. Hillerud had the top finish outside of Lind, coming in 10th on floor (9.175) en route to a 34.475 all around, good for 16th.

The Blue Jays struggled on bars, which has been a trend, but had a nice day on beam with just two falls in eight routines. Madison Mandan’s 8.65 was good for 14th on beam.

“We were very competitive there with everybody accept Dickinson, so we can take a lot of encouragement out of that,” Tews said. “Maybe we do things a little better next week and take it up another notch or two.”

The Blue Jays have a near home game for the state meet when the 2-day affair kicks off Friday in Valley City.
