A 63-year-old Cedar, Minn., resident died Sunday in a two-vehicle crash at 3 p.m. on Interstate 29 in Traill County, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.
Dennis Lee Johnson was southbound on I-29 in a 1999 Ford Explorer when he apparently lost control of the vehicle on the wet, scattered slippery road surface while passing a southbound 2013 Volvo tractor/trailer being driven by Kevin M. Fogarty, 43, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The patrol said after the Ford Explorer struck the side of the trailer it was apparently struck by the rear trailer tires, then entered the median and overturned, ejecting Johnson. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Fogarty was wearing a seat belt and wasn’t injured, the patrol said.
The Ford Explorer was totaled.
Responding to the crash in addition to the patrol were the Traill County Sheriff’s Office, Hillsboro Police Department and Hillsboro Fire and Ambulance.
The crash remains under investigation, the patrol said.
