The Jimmies will head into postseason play with some momentum.
After seemingly beating Mayville State in regulation on a 3-pointer by Taylor Newton with less than two seconds left, Mayville State answered with a late prayer of its own as Austin Emerson forced overtime with game-tying triple at the horn.
As it was much of the game, overtime was back and forth but two late free throws by Breshion Tucker finished off a 73-70 JC win at Lewy Lee Field House in Mayville Sunday night.
T u cke r had his best game of the season, making seven of 11 shots en route to a careerhigh 24 points. The freshman p o i n t g u a rd made three of seven 3s, had five reb o u n d s and three steals.
D avo n T h o m a s finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Jimmies. Newton also had 15 points on six of nine shooting.
Mayville State held a slim one-point lead (27-26) at halftime. The Comets were aided by the effort of Austin Emerson, who had a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.
Jamestown College won the rebounding battle 39-25, but lost the turnover edge, finishing with 16 to Mayville State’s 11. JC also flourished thanks to a 16-of-21 effort from the free-throw line.
The win snapped a brief two-game skid for the 13-17 Jimmies, who will be apart of the the Association of Independent Institutions tournament that runs Friday through Sunday at the Civic Center.
The tournament concludes Sunday with the championship game at 4.
Steve Ivory Jr. led the improved Comets with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Mayville State finished its season at 9-18, but closed by winning three of its last four, including a win over 20th-ranked Valley City State on Wednesday.
