Shanley debate team plans for NY

FARGO — Members of the Shanley High School debate team of have advanced to the “Elite 8” finals of the Bickel & Brewer/New York University International Public Policy Forum.

FARGO — Members of the Shanley High School debate team of have advanced to the “Elite 8” finals of the Bickel & Brewer/New York University International Public Policy Forum.

The team won an all-expenses-paid trip to the IPPF Finals on April 12-14 in New York City.

The Shanley students will now compete for $10,000 and the right for the team to be named the “World Champion.”

After having won in the written rounds of the competition, the Shanley team will now take part in a single-elimination oral debate competition.

This year, 213 teams were in the competition.

Teams wrote a 2,800-word essay on the topic “Resolved: Adaptation should be the most urgent response to climate change.”

Other “Elite 8” teams include: Bellaire (Texas) High School; Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif.; East Mountain High School in Sandia Park, N.M.; The Dalton School in New York City; Debate Development Initiative in Singapore; Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Ohio; and Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz.
