The Carrington Cardinals got off to a bit of a slow start, and they were never able to fully recover during the championship game of the District 7 tournament at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Tuesday night.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan’s Collin Delorme (14 points) and Austin Longie (11) led 9 players in scoring, as the Indians won the District 7 crown with a 54-51 victory over the Cardinals.
Carrington scored just 5 points in the opening period and trailed the Indians 28-16 at the half. Carrington’s Austin Johnson was limited to just 2 first-half points, but he awoke for 18 of his game-high 20 points after the break to help Carrington almost pull off the comeback.
Longie was tabbed as the District 7 Senior Athlete of the Year, while Four Winds/Minnewaukan coach Rick Smith picked up coach of the year honors. The District 7 Athletic Director of the Year went to Carrington’s Karla Michaelson.
Both teams advance to next week’s Region 4 tournament, also in Devils Lake starting on Monday. Carrington will face Munich/Starkweather at 4:30 p.m., while Four Winds/Minnewaukan will face Benson County at 6 p.m.
The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets kept their season rolling, also earning a trip to the Region 4 tournament with a 65-48 victory over Warwick in the first of two region qualifiers on Tuesday.
Chance LaBrie (17 points), Josh Edmonson (15), Seth Gilliss (11), Ethan Haley (10) and Jacob Lommen (10) all hit double figures in scoring, as the Rockets’ balanced offensive attack was too much for the Warriors in the end.
The game was tied 30-30 at the half, and the Rockets led just 46-42 to start the fourth. But a big fourth period, where the Rockets outscored the Warriors 19-6, led the team to victory.
Warwick was paced with 13 points from Antoine Motley and 11 more from Larse Azure.
Harvey/Wells County scooted past Lakota/Adams-Edmore 55-34 in the second region qualifier.
Andrew Alveshere hit a trio of 3-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Hornets to victory. Koby Houchin chipped in with 14 more.
The Raiders were led by Eric Haugland with 8 points.
The Rockets will take on the North Star Bearcats at 3 p.m. in Devils Lake on Monday, while the Hornets will play St. Johns at 7:30. North Star defeated St. John 82-45 in the District 8 championship on Tuesday in Langdon.
