Bismarck officials sort out recycling plan

Officials in North Dakota’s capital city are sorting through the details of a newly adopted curbside recycling program. Bismarck commissioners voted Feb. 12 to begin the program for all single-family households. City Director of Public Services Jeff Heintz said he hopes it gets under way by early fall.

BISMARCK (AP) — Officials in North Dakota’s capital city are sorting through the details of a newly adopted curbside recycling program.

Bismarck commissioners voted Feb. 12 to begin the program for all single-family households. City Director of Public Services Jeff Heintz said he hopes it gets under way by early fall.

But there are some issues to sort out, largely because commissioners decided to allow residents to opt out of the program.

Those who elect to stay in the program will place recyclables such as aluminum, plastic and glass bottles into one container. Residents will be able to specify whether they want a 96-gallon container or one that’s just 65 gallons.

Heintz told the Bismarck Tribune that the city also is weighing a “pay as you throw” rewards-based program.
