FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A lifelong Fargo resident and military veteran has been awarded the Legion of Honor medal by the French government.
North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven presented Merle McMorrow with the medal at a ceremony on Wednesday.
The Legion of Honor is the highest decoration in France. McMorrow was honored for his extraordinary bravery in helping to liberate the country.
McMorrow enlisted in the military in April 1943. From May 1944 to December 1945, he fought in the battles of Rome-Amo, Southern France, the Ardennes, the Rhine Valley and Central Europe.
On Aug. 15, 1944, McMorrow was part of the landings in the south of France called Operation Dragoon that helped liberate St. Tropez, Le Muy, and La Motte. He also fought in Alsace-Lorraine and the Battle of the Bulge.
