Jamestown coach Dave Tews was hoping for a top-five finish at the state gymnastics meet on Friday, but it wasn’t easy.

Despite a tough day on the balance beam, the Blue Jays scored a 139.850 to edge Bismarck Century for the fifth spot in Valley City.

“We’re happy with that,” Tews said. “To stay in the top five, even though we struggled. We were in the top five and left a few points out there, but we’re not the only saying that.”

Dickinson trounced the field with a 149.917, ahead of runner-up Minot (145.417). Individual competition is today, meaning any champions from Friday’s events don’t bring home any hardware.

Alex Lind finished third in the all-around with a 37.567. Dickinson’s Acacia Fossum was the champion (38.467), beating out Bismarck’s Kaylee Keller (37.7) and Lind.

The balance beam was not kind to Jamestown, as Lind managed to tie for 10th place with a 9.0. Only Erin Hillerud found her way into the top 30 in the event, placing 26th (8.1).

“It was like me being on beam; everything was a battle,” Tews said. “I don’t know if it was nerves. The other team we were with on beam … neither one of us could stay on. … We regrouped pretty good after that.”

Lind took third in the floor with a 9.6, fourth on bars (9.533) and fifth on the vault (9.433). The Blue Jays’ next highest placer was Erin Hillerud (bars) and Jenna Stilwell (vault), who both finished 13th.
