BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota’s House has killed a proposal to require drug testing for some North Dakota welfare recipients.
The House defeated the bill 72-19 on Friday.
The measure would have required applicants of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to submit to drug testing before getting assistance.
Officials said fewer than 1,800 North Dakotans participate in the program, and about 45 percent are children.
Social services officials have been critical of the measure, saying it unfairly targets the poor and might be unconstitutional.
Budget analysts estimated the measure would have cost the state more than $595,000 over the next two years to implement, including $100,000 that would have been set aside for legal challenges.
