The pitching and defense were good, the bats still have to come around, but when the opening weekend of the season ended in the wee hours Sunday morning at the Metrodome the Jimmies were 3-1.
After dropping the opener to St. Ambrose of Iowa late Friday night, Jamestown College responded with three straight wins and came home 3-1.
“Anytime you get a chance to play a good team and win three out of four, no complaints,” said JC head coach Tom Hager. “We only made one error in four games and our pitchers threw a lot of strikes. However, we have to shore some things up offensively. Collectively, we need a better approach at the plate. We have some very talented hitters, but we need to have a better approach and put the ball in play at a much better rate.”
The Jimmies had to wait until the University of Minnesota was done playing Western Michigan both nights. The games ended after 2 a.m. Saturday morning and 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
“It’s a unique situation, you have to be mentally prepared. But I thought we did a pretty good job being ready. We played with some energy and found ways to win,” Hager said.
The Jimmies are back at the Metrodome March 5 for a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul.
St. Ambrose 4, JC 1
St. Ambrose got to JC staff ace Paul Roers for three runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a season-opening 4-1 win.
The Jimmies scored a single run in their first at-bat of the season, but got nothing the rest of the way and were held to five hits.
Roers, the tall right-hander from Moorhead, had five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
Spencer Flaten, a junior from West Fargo, had two of the Jimmies’ hits.
JC 12, St. Ambrose 2

The Jimmies ended the nightcap early with a pair of 6-run innings, the second coming in the top of the sixth.
Flaten had another 2-hit game, including a double. Nico Moreno was 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI. Mitch Stevens and Nathan Christiuk also were 2-for-3. Stevens had a pair of RBI.
All the runs benefited Adam Ranger, who went six strong innings, fanning five without a walk. The Jimmies scored six runs in the top of the second to give Ranger a cushion.
“Adam threw the ball really well. All four of our (starting pitchers) gave us a chance to win and that’s something we expect to be a strength of this team,” Hager said.
JC 2, St. Ambrose 1
Darren Iseri’s first start for the Jimmies was a dandy.
The junior from Lake Stevens, Wash., fired a complete game in the opener on Saturday night, allowing just two hits in seven innings.
“Darren red-shirted last season, but right from when he came into the program we saw he had a lot of potential,” Hager said. “He threw a lot of strikes and made big pitches at big times.”
The Bees scored first, getting a single run in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie, but the Jimmies rallied for two in the bottom half to win it.
JC 3, St. Ambrose 2
Jakob Ohmann delivered late to cap the weekend.
Down 1-0 into the bottom of the sixth, Ohmann’s bases-loaded 2-run double with two outs capped a 3-run rally to put the Jimmies in front.
“Jakob came up big for us coming off the bench several times last season and we got another glimpse of that,” Hager said. “He’s a valuable asset whether he’s starting or coming off the bench.”
Ohmann’s double followed a walk by Nick Melino and a single by Mitch Stevens. Nolan Skowronek, who Hager called a “sparkplug” for his weekend efforts, led off the frame with his third single of the game.
Nick Smart got the win, going 1 2/3 innings with a pair of Ks.
