Nationally known speaker and educator Elizabeth Montero-Cefalo will present the learning program Conscious Discipline at Gladstone Inn & Suites in Jamestown, sponsored by Child Care Resource & Referral, on March 9. Child care providers, teachers and early educators in attendance will discover new techniques for teaching self-control, conflict resolution, character development and social skills to young children.
“Conscious Discipline techniques are life changing,” said Verla Jung, with Child Care Resource & Referral. “The long-lasting impact for children and families is why we are so excited to bring this information to our community.”
This brain-based approach blends the latest research in neuroscience, academic instruction and behavioral psychology to demonstrate that feeling emotionally and physically safe and being in relationship with others are keys to learning and success.
Ninety percent of a child’s brain development happens before kindergarten, according to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. In these early years, children need to be guided and supported by consistent, well-trained, caring child care providers and teachers. Conscious Discipline empowers child care providers and teachers to consciously respond to daily conflict, transforming it into an opportunity to teach critical life skills to children. When children learn to use these skills at a young age, they have greater academic success and self-confidence later in life.
Montero-Cefalo will present this model for success that relies on safety, connection and problem solving as the foundation for higher-level thinking.
“It starts in the heart,” she said.
The event, hosted by Child Care Resource & Referral, is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Gladstone Inn & Suites in Jamestown.
Cost is $45 per person; $55 after Feb. 27. For more information on the conference, contact: www.ndchild care.org.
