NDDOT offers app, email-text services to help travelers and residents

In an effort to help keep citizens informed, the North Dakota Department of Transportation announced the launch of two new communication tools: a smartphone app and email/text message service to disseminate information to the public.

The new smartphone application enables access to NDDOT’s Travel Information Map from a smartphone or smart device such as an iPad, providing an overview of road conditions within North Dakota. Advanced options allow users to add/remove map layers, save favorites, view camera feeds, search by keyword and select common routes. The app can be accessed and installed on a smartphone directly from the NDDOT’s website (dot.nd.gov)

The new email/text message service called GovDelivery enables citizens to subscribe to a number of NDDOT topics, including road conditions, job openings, state fleet vehicle auctions, public events and more. Subscribers will receive notifications through email or text message when the information is updated. The service also allows users to create a profile in which they can create and change their preferences at any time. “Offering these services is another way we can keep the public informed,” says Grant Levi, NDDOT interim director. “With so many people using smartphones and accessing information in a quick and efficient manner, these programs will streamline communication, and more importantly, enhance communication with our residents, businesses owners, visitors and other stakeholders.”

NDDOT is the first state agency to launch a smartphone app. During the recent snow storm in February approximately 33,600 smartphones accessed the Travel Information Map and 3,000 subscribers have signed up to receive GovDelivery email notices.
