A young Jamestown High School boys swimming and diving team showed flashes of brilliance at the state meet on Saturday.
Though the Blue Jays finished ninth with 117 points out of 11 teams, performances by junior Andy Oslund, sophomore Colt Rasmussen and the divers helped the Blue Jays stick out.
Oslund earned the highest placing of the bunch, finishing fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.83 seconds. He also finished eighth in the 50 freestyle with a 23.26.
Teammate Colt Rasmussen placed in the 200 freestyle (1:50.26), finishing fifth and earning his second all-state award.
“For a sophomore, that’s pretty cool to see him do that on this team so early,” JHS coach Ben Smith said.
Oslund and junior diver Riley Thom weren’t far off from all-state nods, which Smith said is figured by taking the average of the top three times or scores over the last eight years. The competitor must eclipse that mark to make all-state.
“They were pretty close in their events,” Smith said.
Thom again led the divers by taking sixth with a 338.95, while freshman Cody Lutman just missed a top-eight finish with a 301.05, good for ninth.
“It’s good for our team, because our team is so young,” Smith said. “This is just more fire for them to work harder for next year.”
Of the 25 on the team, 21 are set to return next year.
“It’s exciting to see who we’ll get back; they’re fun to work with,” Smith said. “They try hard and work hard. That makes my job really enjoyable. It’s good to see them accomplish their goals — to get that fire and to want to work hard, and set their goals early.”
For Grant Curtis, Brandon Hart and Hunter Boehm — three of the team’s four seniors who competed at state — it was one last chance to get in the pool and compete to the best of their ability.
“The last meet is always bittersweet,” Smith said. “Whether you spent six years or it’s your third year, there was still a lot of time spent on it. The fun times, the bus trips, the friends — just so you remember this and use these experiences as you move on and go to college. It’s bittersweet.”
Bismarck Century, with its 10 all-state performers, edged Minot 448.5-379.5 for the state title. The Patriots won six of 12 events, led by senior athlete of the year Dylan Sether, who won the 200 freestyle and 100 fly, along with swimming in two state championship relays (200 medley, 400 freestyle). Century’s Dennis Kemmesat was named coach of the year.
