The 23-year-old tradition of Dakota sailors, Marines, soldiers, airmen and Coast Guardsmen and family members has been suspended until further notice. This annual event normally held in April each year in Devils Lake, N.D., will not occur this spring.
Serving on the board of directors are President Carl Bloomquist, Webster, N.D.; Vice President Duane Carter, Devils Lake; Don Lilly, Minot; Wallace Buckingham, Fargo; Bob Lindblom, Drake; Arden Berggren, Hampden, and Tom Nistler and Douglas Moots of Devils Lake. The board voted to suspend this historical event due to not enough “mission capable” members to plan and organize this gathering.
The board would like to see interested parties, other veterans and or family members carry on this tradition of acknowledging veterans of the prairie. Options discussed were rotating the event to other cities, incorporating the event with military bases throughout the state, or having a veterans’ organization or organizations sponsor or assist with managing the event.
