Cards, Imperials secure title spots

Madilyn Bommersbach hit two free throws in the waning seconds of overtime as the Ellendale girls basketball team staved off a resilient Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock squad to secure a spot in the Region 3 championship game.

L-HMB’s McKenna Flyberg made a layup with time running out to send it to overtime, but Ellendale outscored the Lions 7-2 in the extra frame en route to the 47-42 win in Hazelton.

Madilyn Bommersbach and?Dacey Fuller had 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Ellendale, which meets third-ranked Napoleon for the right to represent the region at the Class B state tournament. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

L-HMB’s Alex Umber had a game-high 16 points. The Lions square off against Kidder County for third place at 6 p.m.

Napoleon rolled into the championship game, toppling Kidder County 58-36.

Napoleon outscored Kidder County 13-6 in the second quarter to take a 29-17 lead into the half. They finished strong as well with a 21-point fourth quarter.

The dynamic duo of Sheridon Dewald and Kendra Weigel appear to have the Imperials on a mission for state. Dewald poured in 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Weigel followed with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Sadie and Morgan Rohrich had nine points apiece to lead the Pirates.

Region 4

Benson County rallied from a three-point deficit at halftime by outscoring Carrington 20-8 in the fourth quarter en route to a 56-46 semifinal victory at the Region 4 tournament in?Devils Lake.

Becca Eberle had a game-high 17 points in the win for the Wildcats, who were seeded No. 1 out of District 8.

Carrington was led by Jacey Engelhorn’s 14 points.

The win sets up a showdown between sixth-ranked Benson County and fifth-ranked Lakota-Adams-Edmore in Thursday’s championship game, set for 7:30 p.m.

L-A-E edged North?Star 53-52 in the other semifinal, paced by sisters Fallyn and Ashton Freije, who each tallied 17 points.

North Star’s?Kelsey?Teubner had 18 in the loss.

Carrington and North Star face off for third place at 6 p.m.
