Nicole Hoffman and Sadie Johnston have their hair salon layered up and running.
Layered Hair Salon is located in the James River Bank Building in Jamestown, next to Babb’s Coffee House.
The salon has a tentative schedule of 3-9 p.m. Mondays, 4-9 p.m. Tuesdays, 5-9 p.m. Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursdays, 3-9 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. every other Saturday.
Hoffman and Johnston worked together at Top Designers Salon and Spa for a few years. Johnston left to open her own shop in Wimbeldon, N.D., while Hoffman stayed at Top Designers.
“We kept in touch,” Hoffman said. “I knew Sadie wanted to do something in Jamestown and I wanted to do something on my own.”
The two hair designers started talking about where they wanted to be business-wise and the idea for creating their own hair salon took off.
Johnston and Hoffman agreed that having their salon next to Babb’s was a great idea.
“I think we both had this location in mind when we were talking about opening our own place,” Johnston said.
“We both had our eye on the location and we didn’t really look anywhere else,” Hoffman said. “Plus, being next to a coffee shop, getting your hair done, that’s always a good thing.”
The two women focus mainly on cutting, coloring, treating and styling hair. They also offer facial waxing.
“We want to focus on hair,” Johnston said. “If a customer is looking for like a spa treatment, I have no problem with referring to Top Designers.”
Hoffman has 10 years of experience in hair styling, while Johnston has eight. Hoffman went to school in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Johnston in St. Cloud, Minn.
Both were familiar with Jamestown before moving here. Johnston grew up north of here, while Hoffman’s mother’s family is from Jamestown.
The salon has been open for 10 days as of Friday and Hoffman said customer response has been “awesome.”
“We’ve had lots of people come in, some of our established clients and new people,” she said.
“We’re getting quite a few walk-ins from the coffee shop,” Johnston said.
