BISMARCK - With time winding down on the shot clock and her career, Kyra Dewald tried an NBA-range 3-pointer.
"The clock was down, so I put it up and prayed it went in," the Jamestown High School senior said.
The shot from the right wing was nothing but net, as part of a 22-point effort from Dewald in a 48-40 win over Mandan that captured fifth place at the Class A state tournament Saturday at the Bismarck Civic Center.
"That's a fitting end for a great career for her at Jamestown High School," Jamestown coach Andy Skunberg said. "What else can you ask for? It's a great way for her to end."
More importantly, the shot fell through with only 27 seconds remaining and the Blue Jays leading by five. The eight-point margin was clearly too much to overcome the rest of the way, as Mandan conceded defeat by calling the dogs off.
Bouncing back from an opening-round loss to West Fargo, the Blue Jays won their final two games at state. They beat Wahpeton on Friday.
"The last couple games, we've had nothing to lose," senior Miah Dabill said. "Putting it all on the floor, it feels good to get (fifth)."
Paige Peterson added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Jays, who finished the season 19-6.
"It's great farewell for them," Skunberg said of his seniors. "This is a hard-working group. One of the better groups of seniors I've coached. I'm very happy for them to get that fifth place."
Mandan, which received a team-high 17 points from JaeLyn Russell, led just twice in the game and both came in the second half. The Braves held a 29-28 advantage midway through the stanza, but Peterson and McKayla Orr scored consecutively on steals at mid-court, and Dabill had a pair of free throws in a 6-0 run that gave Jamestown the lead for good.
Mandan (13-12) stayed close the rest of the way, but Dewald drilled three triples in the final 4 minutes, 46 seconds that effectively sunk Mandan's hopes.
"It was time to settle down and run our offense," Skunberg said. "That's what worked. That's what saved us. We got some key stops and that's the game."
For a game that started at 9:30 in the morning, the Blue Jays looked fresh, relying on steady defense to lead 24-17 at halftime.
"They were loose; they were ready to go," Skunberg said. "They played their hearts out. The came out and defended. ... Give them credit. They worked hard and got it done.
