Stutsman County Commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved feedlot conditional use permits for Mark Kruger, Buchanan, N.D., and Robert Froehlich, Montpelier, N.D. The Stutsman County Zoning Board had recommended approval of the permits.

Kruger’s permit is for expansion of an existing cattle feedlot to 941 animal units; his original permit allowed for less than 900. Froehlich’s permit is for a new 750-animal-unit feedlot.

An animal unit generally refers to one animal, except in the case of a mother cow and her calf, which are considered one animal unit.

Noel Johnson, Stutsman County chief operating officer, said a conditional use permit is required for any feedlot that will hold more than 500 animal units. The applicants submitted all required forms showing how they will meet requirements of the N.D. Department of Health, Environmental Protection Agency and Natural Resource Conservation Service.

“It’s not an easy process for the applicant,” Johnson said.
