Memorial Day services will be held at a number of locations in the area on Monday as the nation pauses to reflect on those who gave their lives in service to their country. Traditionally flags are to be flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day when they are to be fully raised.
In Jamestown activities will begin with a program at 9 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall. Speaking at the service is Rod Olin, family support specialist for the National Guard in Jamestown.
The service there will be followed by brief programs at the First Avenue Bridge and at Jamestown cemeteries. The morning’s activities will conclude with a lunch served at the All Vets Club.
The LaBrash Altringer American Legion and Auxiliary in Wimbledon will hold a service at 10 a.m. at the community hall. Cmdr. Mary Plumb of the U.S. Navy will be the keynote speaker. The program will continue with graveside services at the Wimbledon, Leal and Courtenay cemeteries followed by a lunch at the community hall.
Services conducted by the Woodworth American Legion will be held at two locations. At 9 a.m. services will be held at the Pettibone Cemetery followed by services at 10:30 a.m. at the Gem Cemetery at Woodworth. Speaking at both services is state representative Donald Clark, a Republican from District 44 in Fargo. Clark is a former resident of the Woodworth area. Services will be followed by a potluck lunch at the Woodworth school lunch room.
A Memorial Day service is also planned for 10:30 a.m. at the Kensal Public School. Warren Tobin, veterans service officer for Stutsman County, is the keynote speaker. The service will be followed by a ham dinner at St. John’s Catholic Church in Kensal. The dinner is sponsored by the St. John’s Cemetery Board and will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a cost of $5 for adults and $2.50 for children younger than 12.
A National Moment of Remembrance has been held every Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time since 2000. Participants are asked to pause briefly at that time to reflect on the true meaning of the day.
