The Jamestown High School contingent at the state tennis meet in Fargo is still alive.
Cally Musland split her two matches on Friday, while the doubles team of Sam Kemmet and Tania Bjone also went 1-1. Wins in their first match today would send both Musland and the doubles team into the consolation championship matches.
Musland fell in straight sets to East Region No. 2 seed Andrea Rognlien of Fargo Shanley, 6-0, 6-1. The JHS senior bounced back with a solid victory over Fargo North’s Claire Larson in two, winning 6-4, 6-2. She’ll face Jacey Porter of Mandan today for a spot in the fifth-place match. Porter is the No. 4 seed out of the West, while Musland is seventh.
“Cally played well in both of her matches,” said coach Tricia Gaffaney. “She was able to beat North’s No. 1 player and that was very good to see.”
Kemmet and Bjone took their opening round match to a third and decisive set against the East’s third-ranked team of Kaylee Bergstrom and Adlina Paramarta. After dropping the first set 2-6, Kemmet and Bjone forced the third frame by winning the second 6-4, before the North pair wrapped it up 4-6 in the third.
The Jamestown duo had another long three-setter in loser-out play.
After dropping the opening set 4-7 in a tie-breaker, Kemmet and Bjone rallied to win the next two, 6-4 and 6-2, earning a spot into Saturday’s action. They’ll square off with Alissa Kyllo and Megan Ryckman of Williston with the winner playing for fifth place.
“They seemed to need a set to get going, but once they got in their zone they played well,” Gaffaney said. “We’re excited to see what (today) brings.”
