The first win was a long time in coming.

Eight days after Post 14 opened the season with a pair of losses at Grand Forks, Jamestown headed back to Kraft Field and got in the win column.

Post 14 split a pair of games at the Grand Forks tournament. Ben Walker and Ross Hogan combined on a two-hitter in a 6-4 victory over Fergus Falls (Minn.) in the tournament opener on Friday. Post 14 lost their second game of the day as the Regina (Sask.) A’s strung together 15 hits, most of them singles, in a 12-6 victory.

Still, coach Robbie Jamison was happy to get back on the diamond, and to get in the win column.

“It was a pretty good day,” Jamison said. “We had a lot of runners on base. We scored runs early in both games. We did a good job, even though we were down 8-2 early in the second game, we got back within 8-5 before a couple of bleeder hits got it to 10-5 and we never recovered.

“But we battled hard. We’re headed in the right direction. We’ve showed signs already of being the best baserunning team in the last three years. We ran at will in the first game.”

Jamestown scored single runs in each of the first three innings against Fergus Falls, and took a 6-0 lead with a three-run top of the sixth.

Ian Hogan went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jordan Piatz was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Brandon Gange was 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Ben Walker (1-1) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowed only two hits in six innings. He struck out nine in picking up his first win. The lone blemish on his outing was Nick Erickson’s sixth-inning grand slam that pulled Fergus Falls within 6-4.

Ross Hogan pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his first save.

Nick Walden went 1-for-4 and drove in two runs in the loss to Regina. Reed Monson was 1-for3 with a double.

Post 14 (1-3) will take on the Fargo Sox and Winnipeg Select on Saturday. The tournament wraps up on Sunday.
