Volunteers from Prairie Paws Rescue of Jamestown and Central Dakota Humane Society of Mandan, N.D., traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 22 to help care for pets rescued or turned into the local shelter because of flooding.

Prairie Paws volunteer Kaye John said more than 400 city blocks were affected and 4,000 homes destroyed by flooding. Volunteers helped clean kennels and care for homeless pets.

John said the Cedar Rapids animal shelter was destroyed by flood waters and the city has no plans to rebuild. Many animals are still being surrendered and need new adopters. Prairie Paws brought back three dogs and two adult cats that were surrendered by their owners because of the flood.
