Flu-related deaths higher than average

The state Health Department said North Dakota had 496 flu-related deaths last season. Michelle Feist is the influenza surveillance coordinator for the health department. She said the state averages about 400 flu-related deaths annually. Most of the deaths were people age 65 and older.

North Dakota’s flu season usually runs from October to May.

The total number of flu cases reported in North Dakota last season was 3,817.

Feist said Billings County was the only county that did not have at least one confirmed case of flu last season.

She said Cass County had the most with 750 confirmed cases.
