FARGO (AP) — A defense attorney and former federal prosecutor has pleaded guilty to stealing two hunting knives worth more than $125 each and assaulting a store officer who spotted one of the thefts.
Dennis Fisher, 64, was sentenced on Friday to 30 days in jail, with all but seven days suspended. Thomas Davies, a Fargo municipal court judge, gave Fisher credit for seven days spent at Prairie St. John’s, a Fargo psychiatric hospital and clinic.
Fisher’s attorney, Steven Light, said Fisher pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and single charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault as part of a plea agreement with the Fargo city prosecutor. All four crimes were misdemeanors.
“At this time, Mr. Fisher remains under medical care and supervision for issues related to these incidents,” Light said in a statement.
Fisher was arrested last week after an employee at a Fargo sporting good store spotted him shoplifting a hunting knife. Police said he resisted employees who tried to restrain him and shoved one against a wall.
After the Aug. 1 arrest, Fisher was linked to a separate theft of a knife from the same store.
Fisher was suspended from practicing law for three months in September 1997 for stealing a buck tool worth $60 from a Grand Forks sporting goods store, and for shoplifting two pairs of shorts worth $76 from a Fargo department store.
