FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) — The body of a 13-year-old girl has been found in the Missouri River at Fort Yates, authorities say.

Sioux County Auditor Barb Hettich says divers pulled the girl’s body from the river early Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff Frank Landeis said the girl was with two friends along the riverbank when she went in the water about 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

“She took her shoes off and went in the water,” Landeis said. “At that time, the waves were real high. A wave caught her.”

The girl’s name has not been released. The sheriff said she is from Fort Yates.

“This little girl lived only about three blocks from the river,” Hettich said.

Dive teams from Burleigh and Morton counties helped in the search. Landeis says one boat was pulled off the water because of the strong wind.
