The Jamestown Fire Department responded to a “smoke-scare,” said Jim Reuther, fire chief, saying the fire created a lot of smoke, but not a lot of flames.
The fire started in a refrigerator at 1218 16th St. S.W. at about 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, he said.
Twenty-eight firefighters responded for about 25 minutes along with five trucks including the department’s ladder truck. The department now takes the ladder truck to most structural fires, Reuther said, as a safety measure and also to give the firefighters practice using it.
A female from the residence called 911 and got herself and the children outside while waiting for help to arrive, Reuther said.
“She did the right thing,” he said.
Refrigerators and other appliances occasionally cause fires, Reuther said.
“Any kind of equipment can malfunction at any time,” he said.
