Three Jays qualify for state

Jamestown High School seniors Reid Monson, Nathan Fix and Eric Watne earned another week of tennis.

Monson and Fix won both of their doubles matches in straight sets, first knocking off Williston’s Brook McFarlin and Rory Guenther in a state-qualifying match, 7-6 (4), 6-3, at the West Region tennis tournament on Saturday in Minot.

The JHS team then took care of Jacob and Jon Wanner of Mandan 7-5, 7-5 to earn the No. 5 seed out of the West at the state tournament, which begins Thursday in Bismarck.

Watne finished eighth in singles action.

Watne went 1-2 on the day, but his 6-1, 7-6 (6) win over David Hofstad of Bismarck Century sewed up a spot in Bismarck. He then fell to Mandan’s Jordan Boehm 6-1, 6-2 for a spot in the fifth-place match. Watne lost in straight sets to Kyle Bangen of Minot to finish eighth, 6-3, 6-1.
