The Salvation Army has more than 5,000 pounds of potatoes and the church is giving them away, said Maj. Tim Miller.
A semi-truck driver passing through Carrington, N.D., Sunday realized his truck was too heavy and contacted the Salvation Army in Jamestown so the initial 8,000 pounds of russet potatoes wouldn’t go to waste, Miller said.
Some were distributed to Carrington residents and others will be stored in the food pantry, but the rest are available at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 210 Business Loop W. The spuds are dirty but fresh, Miller said, and residents can fill their own grocery-sized plastic bag.
The thrift store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and potatoes will be available throughout the week until they are gone. Each resident is allowed to bring one grocery bag to fill, Miller said. Freewill donations will be accepted.
