The patrol said Daniel Shelstad, 56, Fargo was driving a 1993 Mack straight truck eastbound at about 8:30 a.m. Friday on North Dakota Highway 13 on his way to the beet-piling station near Wahpeton, N.D. When he was about half a mile east of Mooretown, N.D., Timothy Durkin, 33, Breckenridge, Minn., was driving a 2006 International semi westbound on the same road en route to Gwinner, N.D., to load the tanker. Durkin crossed the center line and was struck in the center of his tanker trailer by Shelstad’s truck. The semi tractor came to rest in the south ditch and the Mack truck and the semi trailer came to rest in the south ditch.
Shelstad was pronounced dead at the scene while Durking was uninjured. It is unknown if they were wearing seat belts.
The Mack truck, which had been fully loaded with sugar beets, and the semi trailer were totaled in the crash. Traffic on Highway 13 was diverted for 5 hours to allow for cleaning up the debris and the on-scene investigation.
