It wasn’t the best of nights for the Jamestown High School swimming team, but it wasn’t too bad either.
Swimming for the second time in four days, the Blue Jays were a little sluggish in a 113-73 dual loss at home to Mandan, but still saw adequate time drops.
“We didn’t swim exceptionally well, but 50-percent of our touches were still our best times,” coach Marney Shirley said. “When you’re in that 50-55 percent range, it’s pretty good. It’s when you get down into the 30-percent range when you get a little concerned.”
Freshman Erin Hart, eighth-grader Miah Dabill and the divers were good as always and Valley City product Kamie Wagar, another eighth-grader, qualified for state for the first time in the 100 butterfly (1:10.97), where she was second to Mandan’s Kayli Johnson.
It was parent’s night for the Blue Jays, who have just two outings left before hosting the West Region meet on Nov. 8.
“I told the parents after the meet, that if these kids stick with it, they’re going to have a strong team when they all get into high school,” Shirley said.
Hart won the 200 IM (2:23.03) and was second in the 100 free (58.61), with teammate Jazmin Shafer (1:00.96) third. Shafer had the team’s best time in the 50 (27.90) as well.
Dabill easily won the backstroke in a solid time of 1:05.87.
“Miah had a good meet. She felt good about her races when she got done today,” Shirley said.
In addition to her state-qualifying time in the fly, Wagar also placed third in the breaststroke in 1:22.08.
Jessica Moritz had thirds in both the 500 (6:14.29) and 200 free (2:17.61).
As for the divers, Brooke Lukach edged teammate Kaitlin Walsh for first, 214.25-212.40, but both were good again.
Jessica Lawrence (175.15) was fourth and Abby Wanzek (169) fifth, even with a balk.
“Those girls have been doing really, really well,” Shirley said. “They’re a very steady group for us.”
The Blue Jays are off until hosting Williston on Halloween. They host a seven-team invite the following day (Nov. 1).
“We’ve improved a lot during the year. It’s good to see,” Shirley said. “We need to keep improving our times and developing the skills to go with the sport. It’s been an encouraging season.”
