DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — The Devils Lake project manager for the Army Corps of Engineers says a 5-foot raise in the levee that protects the city likely would mean acquiring property.

Bonnie Greenleaf said the corps plans a follow-up meeting Nov. 19. She said it will give residents another chance to influence where new alignment lines for the levee are drawn.

Greenleaf said the corps plans choose an alignment by the end of January. She said a trigger elevation will have to be chosen next year, to determine when construction would start.

Lake levels of 1,450 feet and 1,452 feet have been mentioned as possible trigger points.

Greenleaf said the early cost estimates for the levee raise have been revised slightly downward, to a range of $70 million to $150 million.

The corps held a Wednesday night open house in Devils Lake to discuss the levee.
