Illegal immigrants waive hearings
Twenty-three workers from India suspected of being illegal immigrants will remain jailed after waiving their rights to have detention hearings.
FARGO (AP) — Twenty-three workers from India suspected of being illegal immigrants will remain jailed after waiving their rights to have detention hearings.
The men were working on an ethanol plant for a Fargo construction company when they were arrested. A criminal complaint charges them with possessing counterfeit documents.
Preliminary hearings have not been set.
An advocate for the workers said the men are victims of human trafficking and that they came to the United States to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.
U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley has said those claims were “looked into,” but he wouldn’t comment further.
