Traill County rejects courthouse addition

Traill County officials are pondering their next move after voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposed $7.4 million courthouse addition and jail project — for the second time this year. The earliest a referendum on the issue could be placed before voters again would be June 2010.

HILLSBORO, N.D. (AP) — Traill County officials are pondering their next move after voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposed $7.4 million courthouse addition and jail project — for the second time this year.

The earliest a referendum on the issue could be placed before voters again would be June 2010.

County Commission Chairman Steve Larson led the support for the bond issue, and said he’s not surprised voters soundly rejected it. Only 44 percent of voters favored it.

Larson said the timing was bad, because people right now don’t want to pay higher property taxes.

Voters rejected the same building proposal in April. Inflation increased the price tag by about $400,000 in the seven months between votes.
