Letter to the editor: Thomas’ column wrong about Christian movement
A recent column in the Jamestown Sun by syndicated columnist Cal Thomas titled “RIP Religious Right” focused on the “demise” of the religious right movement and those who are engaged in many ways in the fight against forces that are attempting to pollute and harm our culture and society. These would include militant homosexuals, people who promote abortion and pornography, television and movie producers who promote filthy language, nudity and extreme violence and the makers of video games that promote murder and torture, to name but a few.By: Tom J. A recent column in the Jamestown Sun by syndicated columnist Cal Thomas titled “RIP Religious Right” focused on the “demise” of the religious right movement and those who are engaged in many ways in the fight against forces that are attempting to pollute and harm our culture and society. These would include militant homosexuals, people who promote abortion and pornography, television and movie producers who promote filthy language, nudity and extreme violence and the makers of video games that promote murder and torture, to name but a few.
Unfortunately, Thomas takes the view that those who would fight against what is obviously evil are wasting their time at best or actually helping to make the problem worse and that their efforts have largely failed. This is the type of copout that is sometimes heard by those who do not wish to have the “fanatic” label given to them and are very comfortable in their current mindset. They can’t imagine anything that would interfere with their social position in life and sometimes enhance it by condemning all those “crazy Christians out there” who just aren’t with it.
Thomas insinuates that Christians would be better off if they just gave up on the political fight and focused more on prayer and Bible reading and witnessing, and that those things alone would cure our society through another revival. No doubt those things are important and necessary as the cultural battle is fought.
But it is wrong for Thomas to condemn those who are politically active. The Christian wall of resistance may be the last obstacle in the way of the total secularization of our society and all of the pain and suffering that will come with it. Now is the time to take a stand and this battle must be fought on every front.
