DRAYTON, N.D. (AP) — Residents of Drayton can turn on the tap again.

The water in the northeastern North Dakota community of about 900 was shut off about noon Tuesday and school classes were canceled while crews repaired a leaky water tower.

City officials said the water was restored by noon Wednesday.

Drayton city Superintendent Nick Rutherford said it was the first major repair to the water tower since it was built in the late 1940s. He said repairs could cost as much as $16,000.

“It’s a lot for a small town to absorb. We’ll manage,” Rutherford said.

To replace a pipe, about 10,000 gallons of water were emptied on Tuesday through a city fire hydrant.

“What we did is empty out about a foot of water,” Rutherford said.
