The Jamestown High School girls’ hockey team let win No. 1 slip away Friday night on the road.

The Blue Jays led 4-0 early in the second period only to watch Hazen-Beulah score six of the last seven goals of the game to rally for a 6-5 win.

Both teams had just 11 skaters, but too many odd-man rushes by the Novas proved to be the difference.

“We went in prepared to play and the girls played as well as I’ve seen in a long time,” coach Kellen Bjone said. “We just weren’t able to finish it off.”

Alicia Anderson had a hat trick for the Blue Jays, scoring once in each period, including the ice-breaker just 71 seconds into the game.

Katrina Wiest made it 2-0 at the 14:02 mark before Lexy Hastings’ first varsity goal with just 52 seconds left in the opening frame pushed it to 3-0.

Buzzing to start the second period, Anderson made it 4-0 just 90 seconds into the frame before the Novas started chipping away.

Kara Dietz had a hat trick and Payton Borud added a pair of scores for the Novas, who took the lead on a goal by Dietz early in the third period.

“We controlled the tempo of the game the whole time,” Bjone said. “We’d get a little tuckered out holding the puck in their zone and then they’d break out on an odd-man rush coming back. That’s how they scored pretty much all of their goals.”

Anderson’s third goal of the game tied it again at 5-all at the 6:19 mark of the third period.

Still 5-5, Borud got the game-winner with just 63 seconds left in regulation as they won for the first time.

“We can’t get too down. We played well. We showed we’re capable of playing good hockey,” Bjone said. “We took a step forward.”

Katie Nenow finished with 29 saves in the game. Megan Stark assisted on three of the goals for the Blue Jays (0-2), who play at Wilson Arena for the first time tonight, hosting Devils Lake at 7 p.m.
