The score was lopsided, but coach Greg White liked how his team battled the best wrestling team in the state.

The Blue Jays fell to Bismarck 53-18, but did get three pins of their own and managed to keep the deep and talented Demons from totally steamrolling.

“The one thing I was worried about was that once they got on a roll, would we start to fall apart and we never did that,” White said. “I’m proud that that didn’t happen. Every guy was fighting and kept working.”

Eighth-grader Zane Braun got one of the three pins, taking down John Binstock 48 seconds into the final period of their 119-pound tilt.

“It was back-and-forth through the whole match and Zane kept working and finally got him on his back.”

Dustin Mittleider followed with a thorough win over Lane Johnson at 125, wrapping up the fall just 64 seconds into the match.

“Dustin dominated. He looked really good (tonight),” White said.

Tyler Mielke also scored a six-pointer, putting down Shawn Jenner with just five seconds left in the opening period for a pin in the heavyweight match.

“I was pleased with the three guys that did get pins. They wrestled well,” White said.

The Demons posted five pins of their own.

“There’s a reason why they’re ranked No. 1,” White said. “They’re a solid team.”

The Blue Jays, still without 215-pounder Shane Gallagher and unable to fill 103 and 112, compete in the Grand Forks Sertoma Club Invitational beginning on Friday.

“We know we aren’t at full strength yet, but out of 16 teams we’d like to be in the top eight,” White said.
