Mom pleads guilty in bathtub drowning

A Plymouth woman has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the drowning death of her young child while she was on the phone with a friend.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Plymouth woman has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the drowning death of her young child while she was on the phone with a friend.

Brooklyn Center police responded April 25 to a call of a child drowning. Jessica Anita Khemraj-Perkins, 25, told police she put the 1-year-old in the bathtub and ran the water without plugging the drain, then called a friend and left the child in the tub.

Records show she was on the phone for 39 minutes.

The mother said she couldn’t hear the water running from another room. When she went back to the bathroom, she discovered that the drain had been plugged by a toy and that the child was floating in the water.

Khemraj-Perkins faces sentencing Jan. 9.
