Alex Lind and the Jamestown High School gymnastics team turned in a strong showing at the quadrangular meet on Friday.

Lind, an eighth-grader, won the all around title and helped the Blue Jays turn in a season-best team score in the process. The Blue Jays’ team score of 140.975 easily outdistanced second-place Grand Forks’ 127.125 for the team title.

“Overall, it was a very good meet for us,” Blue Jays coach Dave Tews said. “We won because we have a lot of kids that do a pretty good job. Those teams can’t fill those top four spots.

“Our kids keep improving. They’re earning their scores. There’s not a lot of gifts there.”

Lind turned in a 35.500 to win the all around. Even with a subpar showing on the beam, she beat out Fargo North’s Krystin Emil (35.350).

“We’ve been trying for years to get that 36 in the all around,” Tews said. “Lind, if she scores anywhere near what she did on the beam in the first two meets, she would have gotten it.”

A stumble on the beam left her with an 8.000 in that event. But Lind won the bars (9.150), finished third on the vault (9.100) and finished second on the floor (9.250).

Jamestown’s Brooke Lukach tied for first place on the vault, scoring a 9.200 along with Brittany Johnson of Grand Forks.

Mercedes Westereng picked up a second place on the beam (9.050) and finished third in the all around (35.250) for JHS. Westereng was fifth on the bars (8.425), tied for seventh on the vault (8.900), and finished fourth on the floor (8.875).

Kaitlin Walsh (34.700), Nikki Iverson (34.075), Lukach (33.825), Brittany Mittleider (33.650) and Heidi Engels (33.575) finished sixth through 10th in the all around for JHS.

“We had a lot of girls who just did really well,” Tews said.

In fact, the Blue Jays’ JV posted a score of 125.775, which would have finished fourth, ahead of Fargo South.

The Blue Jays will host a dual with Minot on Saturday at noon.
