Willy Marler and Landon Ostlie had big days at the Bismarck Invite on Saturday.

The freshman and sophomore swam to third- and fourth-place finishes individually, and also posted strong splits in a pair of solid relay finishes.

Marler sprinted to a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 23.47. He was second to only Nick Herberholz of Mandan and Thomas Johnson of Bismarck.

The Blue Jays went 3-9-11 in the 50. Tate Carlson was ninth and Seth Roscoe 11th.

Marler touched fourth (52.62) in the 100. The top three placers in the event were all seniors, led by Herberholz.

Ostlie’s best finish came in the 100 butterfly where he touched third in a time of 1:02.51. Only Mandan’s Sam Ellison and Justin Heim of Bismarck beat Ostlie. Logan Rasmussen was 10th in the race in 1:04.67.

In the 200 individual medley Ostlie came in fourth in 2:17.69, easily beating the state-qualifying mark.

The Blue Jays also had a strong run in the relays, particularly in the frees.

Roscoe, Carlson, Ostlie and Marler placed second in the 200 free. Their time of 1:37.09 was second only to Minot’s 1:34.09. The same quartet was third in the 400 (3:44.34). Only Minot and Mandan were quicker.

The Blue Jays finished fifth out of six teams with 253 points. Mandan beat Minot for the team title, 547.5-521.5.
