The Blue Jays posted six wins in a dual against Turtle Mountain Monday night, but it wasn’t enough to get their first region win of the year.

“We knew it would be close, but we had a full lineup for the first time this season and we were excited about that,” JHS assistant coach Larry Eslick said. “Unfortunately, we came up short on pin totals.”

Zane Braun, Brent Mittleider, Blake Bossingham, Mason Krumweide, Johnny Schmitz and Josh Dockter had wins for the Blue Jays, who had a chance to win the match with a win in the heavyweight tilt.

Down 33-28 into the 285-pound contest, Tyler Mielke inadvertently broke the nose of Reese Martin, allowing Turtle Mountain a penalty point and the match as a result.

“You can’t blame Tyler. He was just wrestling aggressive and it worked out that way,” Eslick said. “Tyler can win that match when it counts.”

Mittleider blanked Edwin Houle in the 130-pound match. Houle came into the dual ranked No. 2. Krumweide defeated Leonard Eller 8-7 at 140, after losing to him earlier in the season.

“Brent was in control and took the kid down twice,” Eslick said. “Mason won a tight one to a kid he lost to earlier in the year.”

Dockter also rebounded from a loss earlier to Isaiah Davis at 160, hanging on for a tight 5-4 win Monday.

Braun handled Jacob Decoteau 9-4 at 119. Blake Bossingham had the lone pin for the Blue Jays, putting down Colton Murphy late in the second period in their 135-pound match.

Johnny Schmitz had his way with Derek Peltier at 145, winning 12-0.

Pins were the difference in the match, with five of the Braves’ wins coming by fall.

“I think we still have a shot. We’ll be wrestling teams we match up well against,” said Eslick. “We gave up five pins tonight and we can’t continue to do that.”

The Blue Jays are off through the holidays before returning to action Jan. 9-10 at the Bismarck Rotary.
