Man gets 30-year sentence for sexual abuse

A Fort Totten man has been ordered to serve 30 years in prison for sexually abusing a child. Federal Judge Ralph Erickson said in a judgment filed this week that the prison term for Peter Smith should be followed by supervised release for life. The 30-year sentence is a minimum mandatory requirement under federal law.

Federal Judge Ralph Erickson said in a judgment filed this week that the prison term for Peter Smith should be followed by supervised release for life. The 30-year sentence is a minimum mandatory requirement under federal law.

A federal court jury in September found Smith guilty on two felony counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. The government dropped a third charge.
