Oakes reaches title games
Oakes will be playing for a pair of championships tonight at the Dakota Holiday Tournament in Ellendale. Oakes will be playing for a pair of championships tonight at the Dakota Holiday Tournament in Ellendale.
The Tornadoes boys and girls both advanced to the title game with semifinal victories on Saturday at Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse on the campus of Trinity Bible College.
In the girls’ tournament, Oakes cruised past Barnes County North 58-35 and Leola-Frederick, S.D., edged host Ellendale 41-38 in overtime.
In the boys’ tournament, Oakes posted a big 73-45 win over Barnes County North and Ellendale cruised to a 69-47 win over Leola-Frederick.
Katie Brademeyer scored 22 points to lead the Oakes girls. Mak Sell added 12 and Michelle Warren 10.
Leah Hook led the Bison with 12.
Ellendale erased a five-point deficit to start the fourth quarter and forced overtime, but Leola-Frederick outscored the Cardinals 11-8 in the extra session to advance.
Chelsy Podoll led L-F with 15. Kiley Fuller had a game-high 21 for the Cardinals in the loss.
Zach Roberts powered the Tornadoes to the title game with a 27-point performance. Two other Oakes players reached double figures — Jason Hagen had 17 and Sam Vanorny added 10.
Kyle Heinze had 14 points for the Bison.
Ellendale jumped out to a 13-point first-quarter lead in beating Leola-Frederick.
Tanner White’s 21 paced four Cards in double figures. Nolan Hamar added 19 and Tyler Reisenauer and Ty Bommersbach each chipped in with 10 for Ellendale.
Wyatt Sumption led L-F with 16.
BCN takes on Ellendale in the girls’ third-place game today at 3:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ third-place game featuring BCN and Leola-Frederick at 5 p.m.
The Oakes/Leola-Frederick girls’ title game is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m., prior to the boys’ title game with Oakes taking on Ellendale at 8 p.m.
