Hog numbers down in North Dakota

The Agriculture Department said the number of hogs is down in North Dakota. The North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service said the state had 151,000 hogs as of Dec. 1, down 31,000 from the previous year. The record number of hogs was set in 1943 at 1.1 million, the agency said.

The North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service said the state had 151,000 hogs as of Dec. 1, down 31,000 from the previous year.

The record number of hogs was set in 1943 at 1.1 million, the agency said.

Breeding inventory totaled 39,000, up 2,000 from 2007. The pig crop totaled 662,000, up 51,000 from last year, and the biggest since 1959.

Average pigs per litter was pegged at 9.8, the highest since record keeping began in 1924.

Market inventory totaled 112,000, down 33,000 from last year.

The number of hogs in the United States is 66.7 million, down 2 percent from a year ago.
